Items being marked up by up to 600% by unscrupulous seller

I have been trying to find plants on eBay which I have been unable to source locally - I have found them with a particular seller and the price is fairly reasonable.  However, I have noticed that this shop is selling or trying to sell other (tubestock) plants I am familiar with which you can buy at Bunnings for less than $7 for nearly $50 plus postage.

I have advised them of my concerns through "contact seller" option for a number of these listings without a single response.  The prices of these particular items have not been amended to something more reasonable either.  I have made it clear to them that I am not soliciting any sort of deal for myself by pointing out these items, and I am loathe to support them by purchasing the plants which I actually do wish to purchase.

In a nutshell, I can't find a way to report an unscrupulous seller unless I have purchased the item in question from them.  Can anyone advise me if there is a way to report a seller like this before they take in unsuspecting plant lovers, without having to purchase from them?  It certainly seems that I will have to forgo buying the plants I want because of this awkward situation.  This seller sells many different products, not just plants, so heaven knows how many people are at risk of being "ripped off".

Does eBay ever audit sellers?  I am more than happy to name the seller if that is allowed.

I asked a question and you answered me politely. Nice change. Thanks.

Oh for heavens' sake, grow up. I would not have questioned even up to triple the price at Bunnings. I do question a price of more than six times what Bunnings charge and then postage on top of that!

You are obviously a seller or store owner. Perhaps you need to get a real job and find out what work is before you ask me if I work for nothing. The aggro I have encountered for asking a simple question tells me that there are a lot of people out there who know they are doing the wrong thing morally, even if it is somehow legal.

They are not propagating their own stock. It is a branded product which Bunnings carry. Whether they buy it from Bunnings or from the propagation nursery isn't known to me. Either way, I will never be convinced that the asking price is in any way reasonable - the plant in question is a very common Australian native grass.

FYI  .......    B & M means bricks and mortar, meaning a real shop/store that you physically visit to buy stuff.

Most of the people on these boards are 'older' sellers, maybe that's why you struck animosity.

I am older and walk with the aid of a stick - were you standing up for me?  Because I

need to make a buck or two these days, and I need to make a profit.

Selling things your way doesn't work for me.

I really don't think you thought it through.  I don't know what you expected ebay to do.

After all, ebay is in the business of making money, and if sellers sell for big money, then they make more money.

There are many more unscrupulous sellers on ebay (read Chinese) that they have totally ignored, because they are making money for them

Thank you for the first sensible reply. Yes, the items are identical. I won't name the brand of the product as then the seller will probably be able to be identified, but suffice it to say if I had any doubt whatsoever I would not have put myself in the firing line for so much abuse. While the seller has a good feedback rating, the negative feedback does support my concerns - massive mark ups, non-communication...... Certainly a seller can ask what they want, but why would they bother trying to obtain such a high price on many items if they weren't benefiting enough to warrant doing so? Tubestock plants only have a limited "shelf life" - they quickly grow too big for their containers and die from becoming root-bound and lack of soil/nutrients. I am surprised and saddened by the fact that there seem to be so many people out there in the eBay "community" who just don't care about this and who tell me to "mind my own business" etc. I have put this situation in detail to a few people today, one a friend and the other two people I met socially - and all agree that they can't believe the seller is doing what they are (or trying to), and that I have been lambasted for being outraged. Lesson learned - the eBay "community" is not here to help and should be shut down.

Lily,, I know you're fairly new to the boards & you won't feel it got off to a great start-you won't be feeling the love, so to speak.Smiley Wink

But it ebbs & flows, most of the people here are fine & usually quite helpful & you can pick up a lot of useful information, even though sometimes threads do go off on tangents at times.

But it's good to have someone new come in & question the status quo, ask questions etc, it makes for interesting discussion so I hope you'll stick around.

Who would be the buyers for these plants. Obviously a keen gardener who lives near Bunnings or similar will go there. Maybe people in more remote or country locations could be customers. In which case-how do the plants get there? (You can tell I don't know a lot about plants). Seeds i could understand but plants in tubes would need special handling, wouldn't they? depending on how delicate the plant is, it would need to get to its destination quickly, I am assuming.

I'm wondering if part of the postage cost is absorbed into the cost of the plant. I know you said postage cost is separate but most people won't pay eg $7 for an item, with $50 postage. Whereas if the item is $50 with $7 postage they will.

The only other times I have seen mention of items at insanely high prices has been (as someone else suggested)

-if a seller has no more stock but doesn't want to pull the ad down, so they leave it there with a high price, knowing it isn't very likely anyone would bid at that price

-if they had it earmarked for a particular buyer. Then they may put it up with a ridiculously high figure & make an offer option & when the buyer they listed it for comes on, they offer the agreed price and it is accepted.

But basically, if it is just someone selling things at high mark ups, that is not illegal as such.

Of course i have two cents...

At what point does this price gouging kick in - to where you feel the need to message a seller? 600%?

Is it fine to be ripped off by a mark up of say 500%? or 50%? or 5%?

Or should sellers state their purchase price + overheads then sell for exactly that price - and spend all day every day listing, packing and posting their stock simply to accumulate...? I don't know... feedback??

Or should they be allowed to charge a small margin on top of that so that they have some coin for food, clothes and other such mundane things?

Then how do you set that margin?  - For volume items you set it lower than for things that only sell rarely yes? -Either way that point will differ from seller to seller - item to item - simply because most everyone's specific circumstance it different.

The solution is simple of course - if you cant afford it - dont buy it.

If you are concerned about the elderly your efforts would be better directed in educating them about money, the world and how it works.

And lastly - just out of curiosity - do you pay EVERYONE you buy anything off a little MORE for anything over their advertised price if it seemed like a bargain? If your answer is no then I'm sorry but this is all just a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

ed. - at the op ofcourse its late and i needa nap.

that is only because unscrupulous fund-raising bunnings sausage sellers are charging more than what the actual sausage + bread cost them.  I can buy a kilo of sausages and two loaves of bread for what they would charge me for three snags on bread.  And don't get me started on what shops charge for good old tomato sauce!!!!!!!!

But you get the sauce for free at the Bunnings barbie, so it's worth it!

My local Orifice Works has a daily sausage sizzle - but it's not for charity.

Just sayin'
