Without mentioning seller names - I have been an ebay user since it was run by its original designer in a house somewhere and never had many hassels - firstly as a seller but now only as a buyer. Anyhow, recently I left some neutral feedback for what I considered a very ordinary transaction. WELL, I get an email from the seller about how I have damaged his business and he has a circle of other sellers who will block any further purchases unless I retract the feedback. I have reported the seller's actions to ebay and there is no way I am going to be bullied into changing the feedback - even though it could bite me in the bum as I buy a fair bit of stuff for my collection.
Anyhow, I am wondering how widespread this harassment is and, if widespread, does it render ebay feedback meaningless. Has anyone else been lambasted for leaving neutral feedback? Sheesh, I shudder to thing what would have happened if I'd left negative feedback.
There is a sour taste that I wish would go away.

After reading it again,I do not think the seller was contacted 1st,
It states "I left some neutral feedback for what I considered a very ordinary transaction. WELL, I get an email from the seller about how I have damaged his business"
That tells me the neutral was left with no contact 1st,Which must have angered the seller,
Still the seller had no right to abuse the buyer.

hawker I read it the same way too ?:| :8}
In a later post the OP indicates they contacted them first, before leaving feedback.

Cool,
I somehow missed that.

From their second post in the thread, after I mentioned I hoped they contacted the seller:
I agreed to keep the item but the fact that the conversation was required at all is reason enough for neutral.
And from their third post, after contacting the seller was brought up again:
I did contact Cats - the reply I got was part of the reason for the neutral.

Interesting .... I think that there is more to this one.... reads to me no matter what the seller did or did not do, the OP was going to leave a neutral anyway. "Agreed" indicates some kind of negotiation took place.

The item wasn't as described according to the OP. The seller was obviously contacted by the buyer regarding that. How is the seller meant to rectify the item description then??? He deserved a neutral. Maybe in the future the seller will be truthful with his listings. The buyer agreed to keep the item even though it wasn't as described and for that he copped a mouthful from the seller. Really doesn't sound like the seller is interested in repeat customers.

Look, I wasn't going to talk specifics about this and this is the only clarification I am going to give. I bid and won three auctions and the items were send in one package. Two had minor problems that should have been declared and one was not what was described at all. I contacted the seller and pointed the faults out. I was not interested in exchanges and refunds and two of the items were not too bad, so I said I would keep the items despite the problems. I got a cursory reply, in which the seller said he didn't pay much attention to the description of cheap items. That is what tipped the scales. I was once a seller and I was shocked at this comment. Ebay absolutely relies on accurate description for all items - it was auction and they could have fetched any price.
So, (1) All three items had problems that were omitted from the description, (2) one item just wasn't what it was proported to be, (3) the seller admitted that his description on low cost items is cursory. Fair enough but expect a neutral comment for a lacklustre performance.
Did I email and say "I am giving you neutral feedback"..... no. The transaction was lacklustre and nothing he could do would erase that initial comment "I don't pay much attention to the description of cheap items."
In many years of ebay I have given less than positive once - this time. Would I do it again? I don't know - it has been unpleasant. Either way I should not be threatened with any sanctions, mass barring, and other stuff I won't go into. If this intimidation happens often I think ebay feedback may have become like the Emporer's New Clothes - no one is game to say it like it really is.
BTW - thank you to the hundreds of great sellers I have dealt with over the years. This is a once of and most people I deal with are friendly, efficient, and accurate in descriptions. I think the seller has done whatever retributions he vowed and we will see if I can continue to trade. It is better to suffer inconvenience than bullies.

Gosh the positive with comment removed by ebay actually draws some attention to this feedback

If I were you I would return it and ask seller to refund, if you don't like it, it's absolutely no point to keep it. Trust me, in many cases seller much prefer to refund or even pay a bit of extra to on return cost instead of getting a neutral or neg, as you return the item you are not doing seller a favor, you're getting yourself a fair deal.
BTW a neutral or negative FB can't solve you any problems, perhaps it doesn't even makes you feel better after all.
