Received something not as described. Seller wants me to pay return postage?

Here's the story:

I bought a dvd that is supposed to be region 4 (picture says it, description says it). So what did I receive? Region 1 (USA), so these are useless to me. I told the seller and they didn't even apologise, and then they told me to send it back and they'll refund me what I paid. I'm still not sure if that means the purchase price excluding original postage or all the money I paid.. but anyway they refused to refund the cost to send it back at least. So I would rather keep the $15.00 useless dvds and give them bad feedback than pay like close to $10 EXTRA to send them back.

They told me that in no situation.. I repeat, NO situation, is the seller supposed to refund the cost to send back, EVEN IF they receive something faulty or not as described.

Why should the poor buyer be even more out of pocket for their mistake? It's their mistake, they deal with the cost. So what is expected of sellers in this instance?

A good seller would reimburse you totally, unfortunately, they are not required to do so by paypal and eBay rules.

Wrong? I think so, but that is what you agreed to when you became a buyer on eBay.

This is very unfair but is the case. Its especially irritating when you buy an item from overseas or that is very expensive to post. Paypal makes you prove that you have returned the item and you must do so at your own cost. Its generally not worth the cost to return items and so as a buyer you are out of pocket. When I have a legitimate seller complaint I always offer to reimburse thenm for their cost to return as I like to keep my customers happy when possible. (my selling username is movie_models)

So i guess you have tried to play it?

Alot of Dvd players are multi region and will play region 1 dvds

If your wont, you could buy one that will these days cheaper than the cost of sending it back as  they are old technology now

I agree the seller should pay for all postage costs because they sent you an item you did not purchase.

Just off on a tangent, can you change your dvd player to multi regional?

It must be an absolute PITA to own a DVD player that doesn't play all regions-ours cost around $25 from Coles lol

Leave the seller a neg & wait until you can afford to either buy an all region dvd player or learn how to hack your current dvd player.

The buyer shouldn't be out of pocket, however just as there are unscrupulous buyers, there's also unscrupulous sellers, and it sounds like you've struck one unfortunately.  I personally would leave negative feedback (not something I do lightly), leave 1 for every star, and when you do leave feedback make sure it's factual, not emotional:|

Totally unfair and unreasonable. The seller should offer you a full refund and then send you what you ordered ( if he has one in stock ) at HIS expense for the inconvenience he has caused you. It is most unreasonable to expect you to be out of pocket for his mistake. Sounds like you dealt with a very unprofessional seller.

So what is expected of sellers in this instance?  Be more reasonable. For heavens sake don't be so mean spirited.  Issue a full refund.

There is no way you can force the seller to pay return postage but you can leave them a neg and then do an on line search for a code to deregionalise (is that even a word lol) your DVD player or watch it through your computer.
