Received something not as described. Seller wants me to pay return postage?

Here's the story:

I bought a dvd that is supposed to be region 4 (picture says it, description says it). So what did I receive? Region 1 (USA), so these are useless to me. I told the seller and they didn't even apologise, and then they told me to send it back and they'll refund me what I paid. I'm still not sure if that means the purchase price excluding original postage or all the money I paid.. but anyway they refused to refund the cost to send it back at least. So I would rather keep the $15.00 useless dvds and give them bad feedback than pay like close to $10 EXTRA to send them back.

They told me that in no situation.. I repeat, NO situation, is the seller supposed to refund the cost to send back, EVEN IF they receive something faulty or not as described.

Why should the poor buyer be even more out of pocket for their mistake? It's their mistake, they deal with the cost. So what is expected of sellers in this instance?

If you paid with paypal open a dispute for item not as described and escalate to a claim and return via signature required post to the address paypal give you for your protection.

You will be refunded the total you paid to the seller but unless the seller will reimburse the return postage then you are stuck with that.

The seller can refuse to pay and it would be returned to the sender who then has to pay 2 lots of postage.

If I was the seller & it was my mistake I would send out a region 4 DVD for free to fix the mistake.

BUT.ON THE OTHER HAND..

If you bought an item from KMART, would you expect them to pay the cost of your Bus fare, Taxi or petrol to return it to the shop you purchased it from.

When you decide to shop via mail Order, Ebay or the internet you make the choice to take into account the cost of postage. You are expecting a cheaper price for exactly the same  item with the convenience of not having to leave you home/office/bed and you also expect the same quality service. We all know there is no such thing as "FREE POST" so really you must accept responsibilty for the cost of the convenience, it may be a gamble some times but overall it is cheaper to deal via the internet.

Please stop advising people to return things COD.

To do so means you risk losing your money and your goods as you have no valid proof of posting and if the seller refuses to collect the parcel you can only get it back if you pay the postage both ways plus a fee.

good point 1.35.scale.models. I guess I'm just expecting too much. I work in retail at the moment, and I get the feeling most customers think they're kings and they can demand whatever they want, just because retailers want to attract them so we can make a living. You're right about Kmart 'compensating' us if they mistakenly sell us a faulty item. We have to return it and it may be inconvenient, but no one ever complains about that cos it's just something we know we have to do. Although maybe some people do complain, or maybe they will start to. I just get really annoyed when sellers don't send things as described. How hard is it to CHECK WHAT YOU'RE DOING and be honest about descriptions?? Ah well, you win some you lose some.

Have you ever actually asked for your petrol money or bus fare?

I know people who have purchased things a long way from home and have contacted the retailer telling them they will have to make a special journey to return the faulty product and they want their expenses paid, more often than not they have got it 😉

Really?? And they actually do that? How do they determine the cost and what not? Is there a special guide/system they use?

I've bought something from an online store before and had to return it, and they mailed me a reply paid envelope and got me to just post it back in that. No expense necessary. Although I DID have to address it and find a post box to put it in. Talk about an inconvenience.

I too think it is unfair when a buyer has to pay for a sellers mistake but there is nothing that can be done. My advice keep the dvd or try and resell to get back some of your money and give em negative feedback.
