hi i won a couple of items from the same seller. went to pay for it tonight and when i clicked on the pay now button, a seperate box came up telling me that i needed to put in my phone number before i could buy from that seller. Of course i didn't put it in, but wanted to know what the go was? i paid for a number of items and never recieved the pop up box. i went back to check if it was written in the listing description and i missed it but it wasn't. Is this allowed to demand personal details such as phone number when it is not a requirement???

i don't make a habit of giving my number to anyone, much less a seller in an overseas company.
As stated earlier as soon as you make a bid or use BIN you have authorised ebay to give your trading partner your phone number so what you are saying is rather than the seller setting up their account so that you have to input the info direct you expect the seller to email ebay for your contact details and wait for the answer before they process your order. Imagine if they sell a couple of hundred or more items a day?

Other posters have given you reasons why the Seller may require your phone number.
In a Seller's eBay Site Preferences > Postage Preferences
there's a box that a Seller can tick 'Yes' next to
'Require phone number for postage'.
This Seller has ticked Yes > Require phone number for postage, and on the items where you haven't received a pop up box, those Sellers haven't ticked Yes.

silversterio2 we have all tried to explain that this is a completely normal, ebay policy compliant process and that they have NO reason not to give their phone number but it appears they just don't get it!

Dear,
Hello. If the seller ship your items by fast shippment such as EMS/DHL they require your phone number.
And what is going on?
Get contact with the seller directly.
Best wishes

I'm afraid its no longer a valid argument and doesn't apply to this situation.
