Bye, Bye Barnaby...

Well I suppose it had to happen.

Barnaby Joyce announced his resignation at 2pm  today.

I haven't caught up with the fall out, yet.  It will be over all the news programs tonight..

Tony Abbott is still opening his mouth....I will be happy if he just shuts up for a little while!

If I were Malcolm Turnbull I may stay overseas for a bit longer!!

As for me not liking the Labor party. That is a bit of a generalisation. I have said on many occasions on these forums that I view politics as a pendulum. Labor introduce expensive, but needed social policies, blow the budget, but restore some humanity to Australias social policy. The liberals eventually get elected, restore some financial prudence to the budget bottom line,

Yes I know , it's all Labors fault

Nice to see we finally agree on something Tezza.....

Do you mean the Coalitions massive build up of debt. and inability to manage the Budget or their new Mantra to hide their incompetence

mr marshall gives me no hope for the future in his speeches, hes promising under him all will sunshine and wine.

no tax hikes, no new taxes, no cuts, but there will be more spending and surpluses.

when asked how he will do these things he just says by better managment, yeah right.

if he wins, i give it about a month and it'll be 'oh boy, the state coffers are much worse than we thought. we wont be able to do the things we wanted to, but its labors fault'

i'm really sorry but we must cut spending, slash jobs, raise taxes.

and the people who voted him in will be the first to complain

After 16 years of Labor government in S.A we regularly top the nation for unemployment figures, have some of the highest power prices in the world contributing to a collapse in our manufacturing industries and a crumbling road system that is going to cost a squillion to repair. A massively bloated public service ( nearly 30 % larger than all other states ) that is going to be very difficult to trim, the most stagnent population growth in the country, the fastest aging population in the country as our best & brightest leave for a better future interstate and a total reliance on charity from the other states to keep the piggy bank going through preferential GST  redistributions. This major source of revenue that has been bailing us out may dry up soon if other states get their way and there is no way new industries will come to SA when it has the highest business taxation rates in the country and we cant even keep the lights on !!!

PERHAPS THE LIBS WOULD SECRETLY PREFER TO LOOSE THE NEXT ELECTION AS THE STATE IS AN ABSOLUTE BASKET CASE......Smiley Very Happy

i cant disagree with much of what you say.

but i hear lots of reasons why we are in the state we are, yep, we were a state that relied a lot on our manufacturing sector that is all but gone now.

our mining is not what it once was, new mining that was on the drawing board has been shelved as the stuff to be mined is no longer a viable seller.

i wonder just what is here to offer any big business to come here?

just lowering a tax wont do it.

we have a big state with little to offer, you cant just blame labor for holdens shutting shop.

most of the big manufactorers that are no longer here did a holden, shifted off shore!

yes we have a very large public service sector, because this state is the cheapest to live in if your poor. so therefore we have more people serving the poor.

please point to what this state has to offer anyone to come here?

what new inovative future money spinner is there, to bring a company here to employ thousands?

thats why i say, vote mr marshall in by all means but dont kid yourself 1, that he will do the things he promises and 2 that in 4 years time we will be any better off than now.

yes, give him a go. please, and prove me wrong.

Very thoughtful post David and I agree with most of what you say. To be honest I dont think it matters who gets in at the next election it is going to be fairly tough going and I,m under no illusions that Marshall & the Libs can do much to improve the situation. Unfortunately after 16 years in opposition the SA Liberal party are a fairly insipid bunch and while I was a strong supporter of Xenephon at Federal level, he is not going to be much help as a state coatition partner as he cant be across the full policy spectrum and his candidates are a fairly inexperienced bunch.

Although this graph is a bit old it supports your statement about prices, but note that the two states with the highest costs are states that have privatized their electricity supply, by Liberal Conservative Governments

Re: Bye, Bye Barnaby...

You are right Tezza the gragh is a little old ( 5 years ) and no longer reflects the current electricity market . South Australias problems with electricity prices riding several hundred percent since your cherry picked graph was released is a direct result of our S.A Labor governments crazy experiment into renewables. The SA government has mandated a 50 % target of the states energy to be generated by renewables by 2020. The Government has rushed into this programme without thinking through the consequences. SA currently generates 40% of its energy through renewables.

One of our largest coal fired power stations could no longer compete weith the highly subsidised renewables ( subsidies paid for by SA electricity consumers )  and was slated to close. It could see the problems it closure would cause consumers and offered to stay open for several more years in exchange for a govt. hand out of 20 million dollars per year. The SA Labor government refused and it closed. The result was the statewide power black out of last year when SA did not have enough base load power available to stabilise the grid during a storm which damaged a minor country power line.

The SA government then proceeded to blow the power station up.......literally.   Instead of the $ 20 mill handout, Labor have spent 500 million dollars on a big battery with a very limited life span ( around ten years ) AND DIESEL POWERED generators to try to stabilise the grid. Diesel being the most expensive and polluting form of power generation. Just another example of Labors gross ecenomic incompetance and total lack of understanding of even the most basic business principles. ITS JUST CRAZY STUFF !!!.......... Why would you do that ????

Re: Bye, Bye Barnaby...

if nothing else this conversation highlights the difficulties faced by any govt be it labor or liberal in running things here.

but for mr marshall to be running around saying vote for me i have all the answers, well thats a crock.

i believe he will be so out of his comfort zone [opposition] when/if he becomes premier he will curl up in the fetal position and be sucking his thumb within the first year.
