I've been reading, and watching shows about food around the world, it's diversity and its similarities. And with Christmas coming, I thought I'd ask what your favorite special to the holidays dish is?
One of mine is Whoopee pies, one of my DILs is from Pennsylvania Dutch country and she makes them for us only at Christmas. They are so goood!

I can't say I ever got on board with the halloween thing, living in a gated block of villa's made it hard for kid's to call, so I just never remembered it half the time

Most of the time I would ignore the knocks on the door but there was a couple of times many years ago when I did answer the door.
The first time was by mistake - I'd forgotten about Halloween. LOL I didn't have any sweets to dole out, but I had a stack of spare glossy printed dinosaur stickers from a newspaper promotion so I cut them into singles and handed them out. What kid doesn't like dinosaur stickers? They were a huge hit.
Another year I had sets of A4 gummed paper pictures on Australian animals and insects etc. I think they were from the museum or Gould League or somewhere like that. I cut them in half and handed them out. Some of the kids came back for more. LOL One boy however, gave me a look of disgust and walked away. Can't please everyone it seems. Also that year there was an adult standing on the other side of the road watching which worried me a bit. It turned out to be one of the kid's father who was shadowing them to make sure the group was safe. Phew.

That's funny
I admit I have hidden inside in the past, I feel bad if I don't have the 'treat' for them. Mind you I don't think many of the kids come with a 'trick' prepared, it's all about the lollies

It's definitely all about the lollies!
These days on the rare occasions someone knocks at the door on Halloween I keep quiet too. I had years of training from my mother when I was a kid - avoiding the mormons and jehovah's witnesses. LOL

I wondered about that after I typed it, since my other global friends consider Valentine's and Halloween( and July 4th, of course) to be "American holidays". They are too, and mostly created for the profit involved, but theyre fun anyway.

Zan( et al) , we do give out candy, but we started making up little bags that also have stickers, mini crayons, tiny playing cards or toys, and whatever little mini game we can get a good deal on, like the little pinball games. There's a place called Orient Express that we order from, and another called Party Central, we buy in bulk and anything that doesnt go out at halloween goes into the stockings the kids get at church. We love seeing the kids in their costumes, theyre so cute! We decorate the yard too and play scary movie music, lol!

I love the idea of little bags of mixed items. But then again, I'm a sucker for 'stuff'. LOL
I've never seen anyone decorate their house or property for Halloween....let alone play scary movie music. No one goes to that much trouble here. It would be fair to say there's a strong Anti-Halloween sentiment and shops like Coles, Woolies and Spotlight get a fair amount ot flak for selling Halloween stuff from many regular customers. It's either seen as something American influenced (ie not Australian) or people just can't be bothered.
When I was a kid I found Halloween as featured on American TV shows was quite fascinating, but it never bothered me that it wasn't done in Oz. Ditto Valentine's Day. That was also a non-event when I was growing up. I remember when I was a teenager a new girl from Scotland joined my school and February came around and she asked us what we would be doing for Valentine's Day. All she got was a group of blank faces....and the question "What's Valentine's Day?" She was appalled. 🙂 The more she tried to explain it the more puzzled we all were. Mind you, it was a girls only school. LOL

Having just celebrated 50 years of marriage, if Valentine's Day was a 'thang' here in Oz, we would have been married a week later.
Don't think it's still a thing here. Only commercially for idiots.
