I want to get a couple of turtles, does anyone have any pet turtles or want them. Or is anyone thinking of getting a new pet?

Abandoned pets, apparently red-eared terrapins are breeding in the River Thames. They eat ducks etc! Saw a programme on tv last night about them.
I would never abandon a pet, i just couldn't do it. i hope my turtles won't be expecting duck on the menu, they will be disappointed.

JustDuff, yes I think the pet shop said you need one here but you just do it all through them. They are really cute and just swim about, eat and sleep all day.
they grow to the size of the tank kind of thing
and they can come out of the tabnk and "hang around the house" or for walks in the back yard and a play in the sand pit etc
you will need a special turtle tank - it has an elevated loft kind of thing with a ramp, cos they do like to get out of the water.
We have had a few
some we found crossing the road and some bought from the pet shop as "penny turtles"
they were great, Splat used to sit and watch TV and follow you round the house - was about the size of a dinner plate LOL he loved rubs under the chin. Splat was a shocker though, would bite some people - so they really do have different personalities.
Ours were going great guns inside in tanks with outside visits and time out of the tanks, but when we moved to property, we made a propper little outside pond for them with rockeries - like a billabong kind of thing - toads got in though and laid eggs in the water and poisoned them.
(Splat and Crunch were named as such as they were two of the ones we saved that were wandering across the road)

years ago, I had a penny turtle, but he lived outside in a pond. he never ran away, so we figured he liked it there 🙂

Poor Splat and Crunch. That's very sad. Nasty toads!

oh, and their tanks were near the front door, so if someone came they would swim over to have a peak and say hello to the visitors, Splat always came to the top so you would give him a rub, and then they'd swim to the other side of the tank to watch you in the kitchen or the living room.
Nosey Buggers LOL

crikey, yes the woman at the pet shop said they need a landing, for everything including 2 turtles (be a little lonely, just 1), decent size tank on a stand - just under $1000. I don't know if I want them cruising around the house though, Mr Boris would probably walk on it.

....yes these red-eared terrapins were breeding in the Thames and as mother ducks took their young baby ducklings in for a swim the film showed a duckling being taken by a terrapin from the depths below - one minute swimming along cutely, then *WhoomPHFFF! *bubble-bubble-bubble. The terrapins grew very large once out in the wild.

We were devestated. we had had them about 6 years, and within a few weeks of moving them to the outdoor enclosure, they were all dead - just woke up one morning and they were gone, no time to get them to the vet or anything. Just overnight and no warning.
We thought we were doing a good thing by creating an outdoor enclosure for them, sort of like natural habitat kind of thing - but nope - we killed em.

well you only let them out when you can keep an eye on them, cos they can sneak under the lounge and things, and they can go like the clappers with a bit of grip LOL
If you're just getting Penny Turtles, you could just start with a small tank - ours would have been under $100? (we had to keep the small ones separate from the big ones until they were all aclimatized and the vet cleared them of cross infecting each other) was just a 2 footer I think?
and they need air filters too - I remember we were always replacing those.
More often than the salt water fish, anyway.
Our licence was $135 way back then, what are they now?
