I believe in the things you mentioned. But I also believe in people's right to believe whatever they believe. I believe in belief.

The only time belief causes problems, is when people think their belief is more valid than other's....IMO..

Therefore you believe all religious people causes problems. i.e For you to truly believe in your religion, you must believe the other Gods are less valid.

So do you believe your God is more valid than other Gods Karen? Is that a problem?

Just for the record. Some beliefs ARE  more valid than others. To deny that is silly.

Re: Why are some people bad?

You missed my point. I believe in all religions, all beliefs...I believe whatever someone believes is right for them. It must be, otherwise they wouldn't believe in it.

And no, I don't think ALL religious people cause problems. MOST religious people are good people who get on with their lives and practice the universal goodness promoted by all religions.

Some strong and closed minded believers (in religion or other cause, ie politics) do cause trouble...these are the people who deny others the right to believe what's right for them.

And your last point can't be right, because it is being judgemental of others right to believe.

I was going to kudo this, and want to post I agree, but then I realised that due to recent events, this may not be a good thing.

Re: Why are some people bad?

Some think they get away with it, haven't grown up and realized that others know they are doing bad.

Many are placed on a path based on concious or subconcious experiences in early years by others and it's not necessarily their fault they are bad.

Some enjoy being bad as a rebellion towards restriction.

Some are bad as they think of life as a joy ride.

Maybe you mis-spoke . People have the right to believe in anything they want provided it doesn't adversely affect anyone else. I agree. That doesn't follow what they believe is reasonable or valid. People can believe in all sorts of stupid things. I don't have to respect their belief.

"The only time belief causes problems, is when people think their belief is more valid than other's" By your own logic therefore follows that all religious people believe their God is more valid than others and it's YOU who said that this causes problems. There wouldn't be religion if you didn't think your God is more valid than others.

Some beliefs are based on evidence and probability. Nothing to do with judgemental. Do you believe in fairies or unicorns???

Is NOT as valid as say do you believe in the big bang theory?

Re: Why are some people bad?

If a woman gives birth to a baby that she then raises to alduthood and that adult is bad, is it a case of nurture or nature?

Surely sociopaths are bad but do they set out to be a sociopath or are they born that way? BTW being o sociopath is not being mentally ill.

Psychopaths are not mentally ill but again that are bad yet there are indicators through the formative years that a lot of psychopaths have in common so they can't all be the result of nurture but it must be in their nature.

Some are bad as they think of life as a joy ride.

kope do you mean those that are featured on ACA or TT because they have been on newstart for 28 years, or they live in Parramatta but won't work in the Sydney CBD because it is too far to travel, and those that refuse to get some qualifications so that they have a hope of getting a job?

Or do you mean those that coast along without a thought for family, friends or workmates and have totally me, me , me attitude?

Or do you mean something different?

Re: Why are some people bad?

IMO bob, it's not about believing your god is the only one. That would make a person bad...and insular.

It's about believing your god is right for YOU, whilst accepting the another's god is right for him. It's about accepting that every person has the right beliefs for them and not trying to denigrate their belief. Their belief is right for them. Your belief is right for you.

As for negatively impacting on others, I can't think of a human belief system that is inherently bad. Maybe there is one that I don't know about? Afaik all 900 world belief systems promote positive values?

Yes nevyn, that was an excellent example of the word I corrected earlier.

Re: Why are some people bad?

Why are there "beliefs".

Is one of the reasons, because people are not satisfied with their lot and want something better and instead of making their life better themselves, they want their "god" to do it?

And if things go wrong they blame "god", not themselves?

(Please, God, don't strike me down)

In most cases I agree with you.

Some with some mental illness have no control over their actions, but those are exceptional cases.

Some people are bad because they never felt happy while they were good.

Very sad situation.

Well, I was answering the Op's question.
