I have never heard a man whinge about putting the toilet seat up to pre but nearly every woman whinges about putting it back down. Why is that , even if the seat had a mass of 1000kg it would be far easier ti put it down than up. As fir the lid if you don't shut it when you flush you are just contaminating your whole house with fecal matter. Every time you flush some water particles are atomized and these will contain fecal matter.

In our home, the toilet seat/s are always put down, I guess we learned to do it automatically and all our guests, men and women, put the seats down.

Perhaps it is different from house to house and person to person, but 'down' is how we like it ...

Wouldn't have a clue. I shut it. I like my house to be as free from fecal matter as possible. I would say that most men don't think very much about anything that's why ball sports are so popular. Open up mist mens heads and there's probably a little ball bouncing up and down
