First seemingly arbitrary Negative feedback

I sold a 40 year old model locomotive which was in superb condition, and ran exceptionally well.

Buyer receives and with no prior communication decides to give me Negative feedback because it runs fast, but admits it is in superb condition.

I explained to ebay I have a video of it running, and running very well at all speeds.

Ebay told me it's just their experience and to respect it.

That's really poor when the buyer with 57 feedbacks and mine being the only used train can just leave an unjustified Negative feedback and you have no comeback.

I have well over 800 feedbacks, now with 1 Negative. The buyer even said he's not going to buy another used train, and his feedback appears to support my thought they have had no prior experience with märklin products, and the different control systems they use.

Never asked me, never got in touch with me, just planted Negative feedback.

How can ebay ignore a video and support a buyer who says the opposite of what your own eyes tell you?

Really disappointing experience, both with the buyer and eBay's seeming unwillingness to even consider any evidence to the contrary as it doesn't contradict ebay rules.

I've blocked the buyer but I'd like to warn other sellers to sell used items at risk of a seemingly arbitrary Negative feedback.

First seemingly arbitrary Negative feedback

Yes, there's no accounting for how some people give feedback. Sometimes it is grossly unfair or ridiculous.

If you sell on ebay over several years, you are almost sure to run into this trouble sooner or later.

The actual number of feedback, seller versus buyer, can't really be taken into consideration by ebay when it comes to removing feedback, as even a good seller might sell something that turns out to have a fault.

Ebay has no way of knowing if what the buyer stated is true or not. Your video isn't absolute proof that the train is running that way now. I didn't get the feel the buyer was trying to be vindictive, he was writing from his own experience.

However, you did reply and I think if I were a future buyer, I would be satisfied from your reply that perhaps the buyer wasn't running it with the correct controller. I would also be satisfied that the item itself was in working order as such and was 'lovely'. That is what the buyer himself has said.

Sometimes you just have to credit other, future buyers with some common sense. I am sure they may see this neg but your other feedback is good enough to counter it. Unfortunately, it has pulled your feedback % down but it certainly would not stop me from buying from you as the overall impression is you sell great products, well packaged.

Many buyers will never even get as far as checking feedback anyway.

Don't let it get you down too much. Look on the bright side. Okay, you got a neg but the disappointed buyer did not open  an ebay claim for a full refund and he didn't contact you where you may have felt obliged to offer a partial refund. So you've sold it clear and free. That's a win!

The -FB does not breach ebays policies, and as such ebay have no reason to remove it.  As ebay told you, that is the buyers opinion relating to the transaction.

By the way, there is no basic ebay rule stating  a buyer must contact the seller before leaving -FB.

Thanks though. And you did mention something in there that can give a different perspective: it's the buyers experience of the transaction, not necessarily a reflection of the actual item they've received.

It's just a pity a buyer can, either through their own ignorance or expectations, give a seller negative feedback for something they have no control over

Happens all the time. I sell for money, not ever-decreasing dots. Maybe take that attitude. It reduces angst.

I like that. I think it's likely I'm way over thinking, and yeah: I'm selling stuff because I don't want it anymore, and it's gone.

Thanks man: keeping it real.

You can always leave a factual follow up reply to the neg.

That ship has sailed & it could have been worded  without emotion.

You have it spot on

eBay's stand is it is always 'the buyer's experience' when it comes to neg feedback

Unless in doing so, the buyers says something that is against eBay policy

Even then getting it removed is not always a given

Thank you so much for that awesome response.

Really does a wonder. As you say, my video showing it working isn't necessarily a given. Maybe what I deem as being a great runner isn't the same interpretation as what others may.

Very good point.

And thanks for saying that about my feedback. I'm not a particularly good salesman, I just describe things as I see them, likely putting off some buyers in the process, and accept that when I generally buy things I'm buying sight unseen off a website something that's likely decades old.

Cheers
