has anybody else having a sales crash in oz ebay since the new year and experiencing no sales now

I sell on another id and have been a seller for 10 years and have experienced a huge downturn from $500 to $800 a week to now zero this week, buyers are scarce even watchers, ebay is useless in finding why, just says sellers are dependant on buyers-what if they have dissapeared like here? I am only giving it another few weeks to show something is happening beyond my control & will not have any money to pay ebay for my store and listers, any suggestions?

Interesting post! My daughter is a qualified commercial cook / Chef. She also has 3 bachelors & a Master's degree - still no full time job!  Bachelors are Business / Hospitality & Event Management; Accountancy;  & the Master's is in Primary Teaching - Melb Uni degrees! Her HECS debt is huge!

She's applied for over 300 teaching jobs & got one interview! Most jobs are taken by incumbents who've been there years, but the school has to advertise the job!

Local job centre sent her for a dishwasher job recently. Was unsuccesful as the current cook & the restaurant manager didn't have her qualifications & couldn't afford her or the knowledge she would bring to the position! Even Aldi turned her down as a checkout chick last week!  - Another disheartening find from our Government job centres!

She applies for any job that might give her a chance to get a foot in the door.

H&R Block dont want her either! Too qualified to do their tax return stuff! (She specialised in Tax Law & Forensic Accountancy when doing that degree - so once again over qualified)

Better than that is the plight of 2 of her friends:- The Melb law graduate working as a male stripper @ Crown casino & the dual PhD engineer ( a real rocket scientist!) who works as a truck jockey moving furniture!

One has to be prepared to change, nothing stays the same, baby boomers are dying or downsizing, so are their parents, this changes the dynamic because of the sheer numbers involved.

The market for Australian mint decimal stamps was huge 1970-1980, then in 1980 it crashed and never recovered.

The same with Phonecards and Olympic pins. Two more collectable areas no one cares about these days.

Australian WW1 medal trios used to be $1000 minimum, now you can by some for $500 or less if you know where to look.

Yes. the Asian fakes have affected the Australian coin market too.

Rarer coins such as 1930 penny, 1923 halfpenny, 1932 florin, 1938 crown and 1934-35 Melbourne Centenary florin, 1915 shilling, etc, there are many fakes of these coins sold as authentic via the Internet, mainly by Asian students trying to fund their Australian Uni degree.

Anyone buying such items online, buyer beware, are you dealing with a recognized dealer or authority on the subject?

It is all part of the wonder that is the Internet, it has changed our lives for better and worse...

I hear you Redders .. I too am extremely concerned for my children's future .. one of my daughters is now racking up a major hecs debt pursuing an industry that prior to deregulation of industry actually offered indentured apprenticeships which led to trade qualifications .. so now she will have a $50,000 debt and no job or real skills that can only be acquired from on the job experience .. this same daughter begs for shifts at Mcdonalds and often starts at 4am on well below adult award so you can imagine how angry I am that the government has targeted her humble child's hospitality salary as an obstacle to commerce (reduced penalty rates by the so called Fair Work Commission (this title is in the running for the ultimate Australian Oxymoron for 2017) .. we are on a very slippery slimy slope .. some may say well greased to ensure that no plebeian gets a toehold .. housing is only for the mega rich and cashed up investor types etc etc not for poor people (you follow?) .. hence prepare if you are poor as you may well need to find a place to put up a tent and learn bush survival skills all the while being hunted by heat seeking equiped helicopters looking for rent evaders or worse unrigistered vegetable gardens which are apparently denting Woolworths bottom line (Sounds incredible but John Howard (when elected to office) actually complained (from the floor of Parliament (numerous times) about subsistence gardeners being untaxed!!! and literally eroding Woolworths profits!!!) ..

I am seeing/feeling that we will have serious rioting in the streets quite soon!! These ruthless investor/lobbyists/corporates/bankers who have our governments ear do not care that this all leads to slavery and domination of the lower classes by globalist corporations .. as a side point our tax system is structured so as to disadvantage Australian businesses whilst giving tax dodging corporate scum and investors a free ride ..

Put Labour and Greens first at the next election is all I can say or you can kiss Medicare goodbye, we have all seen that the LIB party has a real hard on about destroying our enviable health care system so as to hand mega profits to the international insurers (BANKERS!!) .. if you are still following me I implore you all please do not trust One Nation they are dysfunctional and extreme right wing and obviously in bed with the Liberal party (WA election preferences) .. you lay down with dogs you get up with fleas and all that ..

Good luck redders and I do hope your daughter's forensic accountancy skills get put to good use (after Labor gets voted in by a landslide at the next federal election) hunting down and prosecuting the Malthusian/Machiavellian scum that have done this to us ..

Yes and ebay says feedback does not affect your sales=ask them thats what they say, the feedback system on ebay stinks not only in my view but in most people expect a fair feedback not a one sided one where the buyer should know better as a matter of common sense not just to get even because they were in the wrong! The ebay feedback system is rotten and should be addressed by the ACCC or fair trade as nowhere that I know of has a system of harsh judgement such as ebay that is left to a miffed buyer in the wrong to try and detroy a good sellers reputation, amazingly I had a few sympathy letters from some of my sellers in regard to that negative as they stated and asked why did not ebay remove that as unfair? I tried that but ebay is a one sided street and a seller wins very few battles on ebay (Paypal is even worse!) Talking to someone out of the country about it makes it even worse and cringe if I have to ring ebay now-I am sure many will agree with me on that one how frustrating it can be!

I also buy quite copiously when I have the sales to be able to do so and my items provide me with that ability and now that will not happen unless something turns for the better, many of my sellers I deal with have negatives and I do not take any notice of them as they are so easily aquired no matter how much you do and like mine are the result of miffed buyers yes who especially cannot read or are too lazy to read-big problem no matter how much you put on your listings!

I dont think buyers are too concerned with a few comments that are adverse as they are after an item like me will buy it not listen to someone that by my follow showed was nasty and did not read my conditions, any way this is getting off the track ands agree with member x3n0m comments that the country is going down the spout and again if you read his comments this shows why sales are down and again ebay does not seem to care as yet but they will, nothing is surer they will.

Yes ebay used to be a good & safe place place to sell and I have run auctions since it started back in the 2000 odd some 16 years but ebay became greedy and now it is starting to show and I think it was better when it was simpler, bad feedback was certainly not a problem as we could neg back the facts to them so they did not leave it unless the sale was seriously wrong-and certain buyers know they can try and wreck our feedback as we cannot leave neg feedback now and we have little in the way we can tell the facts as I do with a reply as I do-other sellers need and deserve to know what really went wrong when ebay cannot?

My daughter did a free internship in forensic accountancy with a large insolvency company for 6 weeks pro bono (no money for the reference that never arrived despite promises a glowing reference would be hers!)

Anyway; She went into a stripped over the weekend company & found all that was needed from the books to retrieve assets. (Trucks; cars; furniture; & even the fire extingushers had gone!) Quicker than those that were being paid $160 per hour for the same task - all using her own laptop & getting into the onsite server, which was the only computer left on the premises.

The kicker was instead of a reference she got months later a fully detailed court overview of the case. Some 1200 pages. Which included a detail of all costs incurred in recovery of the goods & monies; & not a Thanks nor reference to her name!

She did however ensure all the unpaid workers were paid out; Though Superannuation entitlements were an issue. But worked out fine for the elderly workers in the end.

I think your listings are a bit misleading TBH

Are your pics stock photos?  Pretty photos, but not the actual plant bought.

Most of your listing titles state, e.g. 10cm pot,  6.5cm pot etc etc

But after a lot of scrolling and scrolling - too much and people stop reading

You then have pics of a mature plant and the plant that people will receive.

All photographed in pots.

But you end up with this, in the middle of it all

Note: Plants will be posted bare rooted without the pots shown.

Any wonder people are giving negs.  They expect it to be in a pot regardless.

I have bought plants - bare rooted, that the seller has actually posted to themselves,

and then photographed, to show what condition they would arrive in, after 5 days

in the post.

And you don't handle criticism very well.  Feedback does count.  That's what it's for.

The way a seller handles a problem is everything to me.

I find if a seller doesn't deal very well with negs, then I just might have trouble

getting a problem solved, if I bought from you

Negs must be handled professionally, regardless of what the buyer wrote.

It's also no good saying 'sellers beware' if you don't reply with their full id.

How does anyone know who they are?

Sorry for the scroller, but you came here and asked.

This forum is not about politics so leave it alone.

For all of those WHO WANT ANSWERS AS TO WHY EBAY SALES ARE DYING please continue to read.

On top of a long string of issues the main reason why sales have been slowing for EVERY ebay retailer is that eBay has wound back its digital advertising on search engines (predomintely Google). They started in early 2015 and then cut again in March 2016 and a much larger cut in mid August 2016. You can visiibly see this is yourself by going to the 'Performance Tab' of your 'Seller Hub' and adjusting date parameters. The filter identifies how many page views you get from within eBay & outside of eBay....Watch for the drop in visits from outside of eBay and then analyse your sales data to confirm. You will notice the effects of this more after January as consumers spend more in months September to December. In laymans terms, views that come from outside of eBay are from people wanting to buy and views from inside are researchers.

In addition to the above, you can read press releases about eBay cutting expenditure on digital advertising because they feel that its too costly. This is clearly not working for retailers on their platform HOWEVER according to articles in the news they have 5 billion nett debt and are trying to re-invent themselves of which you cant blame them for. Is it little too late? Who knows but I would imagine that its on a knifes edge given that PayPal was spun out of eBay in 2015 which suggests that there is no need for 2 ships to sink. Throw in the fact that they were hacked in 2014 and all user id information was stolen, more competition and in reference to eBay Australia the goverment has just released in the press today that Google Tax has been passed into law i would imagine eBay will be one of those companies hit with a large notice.

As small retailer you are probably best not relying on eBay to drive growth business growth.

And you are exactly why I have so much information as it appears you have a poor ability to comprehend like others that leave off-handed negatives that have nothing to relate to the actual sale or item, we are not here for burning me about my listings and how my listings are constructed but to see if we can find out why ebay is down and down a lot to non-existant-did you take the time to read others accounts? obviously not, sales are down not just for me but many others, and another thing if I sent in pots nobody would pay the postage as soil and pots weigh much more than a bare rooted plant-would you pay the extra-I doubt it! Hard enough to get people to pay post now. The pictures show 1st a mature plant (nobody would buy a young plant as they do not look like the mature plant, the 2nd pics show the young actual plant, shown in pots is so people can guage the size not to recieve the pot and that fact is made clear as you posted so is not mis-leading, it is only misleading to people like you that are too lazy to read everythings to protect yourself-and ZI am not alone in listings having so much info as they dont get it even then, no you would leave a neagative and blame me for your error-sorry you dont think I would leave your statement un-answered and I have, try selling and then you can answer question as others have done in better sincerity!

I asked a question I did not ask for a lashing from some GenY or worse a self appointed forum queen that obviously spends a lot of time here 21,506 posts in less than 3 years-wow- answering other members concerns! that would also no doubt leave the same type of feedback, and another thing where are your listings seeing you know so much about selling?

I agree with partynaccessories in leave the politics out of this as there is a reason for this downturn that is concerning many and he may be right that we are like rats on a sinking ship due to their own folly and they wont care one iota that you are sinking with the ship!

Wow, have you got imastawka wrong.

But that aside, I thought when I looked at your listings that the postage was rather high but now that you stress about buyers not paying the postage for plants in a pot I am convinced that your postage is very high.

I have been a regular buyer of plants in the past but your replies to feedback would turn me right off your listings even though you have some lovely plants....I am a cactus and succulent tragic.  I can go to my local nursery and get similar plants to what you are selling, already potted, for similar prices without the high postage.

For people to buy living plants on line they need to see some advantage such as better prices to take the risk of how they are going to arrive.  I have bought cuttings from ebay that were sent from Queensland to Sydney in a satchel in summer.  The seller did not sign the Declaration so they came by road.   It was a lovely mush when it arrived.
