You had told the seller that you were going to return the item, so wouldn't he have told you if he intended to go away? Although of course something could have happened. You never know, but it sounds a bit weird. Quite often sellers also put an announcement in their shop when they go away.
You have a confirmation from AusPost, so you should get your money back either from eBay or PP.
How long have you already waited for a response from the seller?

Ebay allow up to 35 days for the seller to respond

Have you uploaded the return details into the system now?
If not, do so, and eBay should find in your favour and you will receive your refund from the seller.

@aquanita wrote:I actually did click the return process with Ebay and open a case (been open for more than two weeks now). However, when I sent the item with tracking I did not add the tracking number into the system. I sent a message to the seller through Ebay with the tracking number and a photo of the parcel with tracking.
The seller did not give me any advice, he just said to send it back for a full refund (in a message through Ebay).
There's the problem right there.
Do as Kat says, and upload the tracking number into the dispute and you should be refunded.

Please follow my advice, or you will not get your refund - eBay chat know nothing.
Use the tools eBay give you (resolution centre) and follow the protocol.

Thanks for that. Seems I had to go about this a long way to add the tracking number and get the Ebay staff to add it in as I could not add it through the resolution centre. I emailed the tracking number to the customer support email (after getting my chat transcript) and then a staff member replied via email saying they have added the tracking number to the case and to wait for seller to reply.

Thanks!
am learning that ebay chat really do 'know nothing' and have little help to offer other than the basics. I have never spoken with the same person twice, not even via email.

About two weeks for a reply time. And now again waiting to hear back....

Did they tell you how long the seller has to reply? Because usually in the eBay resolution centre they tell you how long the seller has to reply and that if they don't reply eBay can intervene. It will be from the day the tracking number was added to the case though, so I am not sure the two weeks you have already waited count because it was not inside the Resolution Centre but in private messages to the seller that you gave him the tracking number, right?
It should all go well if they have now added the tracking number. I think that eBay usually gives sellers less time to reply than PP, so it should not take long. Good luck!
