I heard on the news another 2 Australians died in Bali. Why do Australians go there? We have better places to holiday at right here at home!
We have great food, fantastic beaches and many beautiful places to go to so why do Aussies feel the need to go to third world countries when we have everything here?
We are fortunate to have the best of everything why risk it all in a country with standards far below ours.
If I were given free flights + free cash to go to Bali I would decline! No way would I go there under any circumstances.
Support Australian jobs.
Support our economy.
Spend your money here.
Holiday our wonderful country.
How many more Australians have to die over there before people wake up?

My son took his family to Fiji for a holiday, they loved it, last year they went to Indonesia and to Thailand. Fiji holiday was shorter and cost the most and was not as memorable as the other trips.

UFI:" Bali, why do Australians go there? " I agree, if it is the various overcrowded "little Australia" type areas, but whilst not as attractive ( unless you are well away from the South) as Fiji, I would not go to Fiji in a fit because it is a military dictatorship still with many restrictions including censorship of news media, control of the law ( a trade union official cannot even express support for a political party) the last Constitution has been dumped, and there are no elections.
Fiji has been suspended from the Pacific Islands Forum and the Commonwealth of Nations for refusing to hold democratic elections
Fiji in many aspects of life/business/politics/law actively practises racial discrimination, with the losers being the Indo-Fijians.
Not for myself.

Just OT for a moment.. my laptop is brand new and brightness is set at about 15%
Sorry imastawwka, it was only a guess. FYI I sit a metre away from a 24" monitor & I could read War & Peace in that font & colour. And I complained about overbright web pages all the time before I changed monitors. Obviously different foks perceive different things on different screens differently.
Back on topic, I gave Bali away in 1992. I had a good run going many times up to then, on my last trip I decided that commercialisation had ruined what was a wonderful destination. It was a far cry from the paradise I found in 1976 & I felt very sad for the people & what they had lost.
Funny thing, I clearly remember sitting around Poppies one night (there & The Pub were about the only places worth going to) back in 76 talking with a group of ex-pats. One old vet who had been there since the 60's said he was moving on. He said he didn't want to stay now all the tourists had ruined the place. Ruined the place?? Blimey, Jalan Legian was the only road bitumised & it had wide open drains running down both sides & they were yet to put in a set of traffic lights. I think he would drop dead if he saw it today.

I wasnt very impressed with the Gold Coast when I went 6 months ago. Would hate to live there.
I just booked my flights and accomodation for Thailand, lets hope I dont get sick over there, next purchase travel insurance.

I think it depends on what you are looking for as to the best place to live or holiday. I am looking to retire to the Gold Coast sometime.
