As can be seen in the photo, Foo has had a blood test done today.
i noticed a swelling on his snout on friday morning so took him in to the vets friday afternoon.
the swelling is thought to be a tooth abcese.
whilst at the vets the vet noticed looking at Foos weight he had lost over 2 kilos since last december and about 5 kilos in a year!
hence the blood test, i will get the results tomorrow afternoon.
hes on anti biotics for his swelling and its allready gone down since friday.
the vet his holding off on the tooth problem until she gets the results from the blood test.
hes 11 years old, i'm not panicing but i am worried.
fingers crossed its not what it might be, cant even say it.
Solved! Go to Solution.

@imastawkawrote:Glad to hear it's nothing sinister, David.
Smiles all round now.
the loss of 5 kilos in a year is still to be figured out of course, is it just natural or is it my feeding him or is it something else.
i hope its just my needing to up his food intake.
i know the test was ok, but i still need to know why hes lost that weight.
as ive never owned a greyhound before foo i dont know if losing some weight in old age is just normal.
so its wonderful news its not his kidneys or liver or the other things the blood test shows, i still need to get to the bottom of that weight loss.
if only he could talk!

With all those visits from the tooth fairy it may be he's not masticating thoroughly.... that's masticating... and so the kibble even though wet is going in ther front door and hurtling pout the back....door without him getting all the goods. Less kibble and more fartfood might see him put a bit of condition back on

Dom, they're busy.
If it's bad news do you want them to just blurt it out so they can get back to
the other dog?
No. There's a way to deal with this, and the wait is just that - a wait.
Sorry - but whatever the news - if I was told after lunch - I would expect - after lunch.
No blurting.
And as it is - no blurting.
i live in a small coastal town, really we are lucky we have a local vet.
there is another practice in a nearby town but i had a bad experience with them and refuse to use them.
other than that its a 2 hour trip to adelaide.
as the area grows maybe we will get another vet but i'm not holding my breath.
or maybe my local vet will expand?
i dont hold it against them for taking care of an emergency before me.

David, I am very pleased that the news is good.
You may well find that the weight loss has a lot to do with Foo's teeth problems.
When you see the Vet ask her about Hill's Science Diet dog food. It is a bit expensive but is a very well regarded food that has different formulas to cover every age of dogs from puppies to old dogs and several special diet foods. They are sure to have something that will help Foo regain his weight.
We were put onto the cat variety when our old cat had kidney problems and he lived to a ripe old 22 years old. Our other cat had it for a short time after some tests which put her off her food. We always kept a few cans on hand after that "just in case".

Rosie has been on "Advance Dental" for a couple of years, very similar to Hills Science Diet products.
the vet sugested it after her teeth were geting a build up tartar, it works well as now her teeth are perfect.
i buy it on ebay as its almost half the cost the vet charges.
if there is a better quality food i might be able to get that online cheaper too. buy in bulk kinda thing.

So pleased to hear Foo is doing OK. As for the 5 kg. weight loss, I have an old dog of similar age. He has a number of health problems including a non malinant growth, heart murmer & plumbing problems that resulted in him loosing quite a bit of weight. Vet said they could operate, but at his age, not a lot of point. They advised to increase his feed intake by 25% instead. Seems to have worked as he has put a bit of weight back on. All the best with FOO and thinking of you Dave.

I'm glad the news is good, and that Foo and you are both okay.

The Hill's Science Diet is stocked by most vets which of course explains the cost.
You could probably buy it online, not necessarily on ebay.
It is often worth paying the extra for these specialised foods as it can work out cheaper than countless vet visits.

Petbarn are currently selling 4 varieties of the Hill's Science Diet for Canines with a 25% discount if purchased online.
