home delivery when paying for post?

when questioned if I mind if the seller keeps my post money  I'm happy to pay if the seller delivers... just wondering what others thoughts are on this situ:

bought a fragile item, it was hand delivered which I was not expecting....(i paid $13 post)...which I realise now they're kept.

advantages being no post office queues if not home, comes to me in one piece and earlier than would have got to me via post.

is this the way it works?

I sell too, and where closeby I have delivered but not for that amount of money...i'd be inclined to refund partial... but perhaps thats just me.

the item is nice.  the person was friendly. any comments?

Yes, I'd have to agree with Panoramic. Whilst there may be a select few who have phobias or past bad experiences, I am sure they are in the minority, and most people are very decent by nature.

However, if you are going to do a personal delivery, what's the harm in making communication first and say you live or work nearby and would they prefer in person or by mail. The worst they can say is no!

Re: home delivery when paying for post?

No, you don't know who a courier or a postie is, until you have seen them a couple or more times.

Then, you kinda do, if you get regular deliveries.

I think the point being missed in this thread (and the recent one), is that the postie, or the courier, is expected to turn up at your home.

As you have ordered a parcel.

The postie/courier, is an official employee/representative of the shipping company, and would be expected to meet certain standards of conduct, say, when he/she "turns up".

There would be a certain level of trust associated with that, on the part of the buyer.

They are expected and expected to behave professionally.

A seller, is "just anyone" turning up at the door. Without a prior arrangement to do so, there will be buyers who will not like that at all. That is their right, really.

Basically, there are no boundaries broken, or misunderstandings if the seller just asks first it it's ok.

Re: home delivery when paying for post?

I tell you one thing, my buyers will never have to worry about this....

A couple of years ago, I noticed one of my buyers' address was a shorter walk away from me than the post office (ahh... the days when my PO was in walking distance, I miss that, but I digress), so I started thinking about whether I should contact them and ask if they'd like me to drop off their item later than day.

But, I hate anomalies, as a buyer and a seller, they make me really uncomfortable and awkward a lot of the time, and it often takes me too long to work out how to broach something if I never have before (and I'm not counting the buyer's proximity to me as an anomaly, I'm counting the idea of contacting them and asking if they'd like me to deliver, because that's outside the standard procedure I'm both used to and comfortable with Smiley LOL ).

So, I walked down to the PO and posted as normal, much to my relief. Smiley Embarassed Smiley LOL

Re: home delivery when paying for post?

I actually like the suggestion on the other thread, where someone was indignant that a seller would even consider asking a buyer if they would be OK with the item being hand delivered ............ Don't ask, just wear one of those coloured vests when delivering the item ......... LOL.

However, the subject of this thread was not about the hand delivery, instead of posting -  approval to do that had been given.

The original poster felt that the cost of delivery was overcharged because it was hand delivered instead of being put through the Australia Post system.

And to eliminate anyone delivering items to her address, she would of course have a PO box OR just not order anything to be delivered.

Do you know this person ?

Why do you say "of course" she would have a PO Box ?

LOL

Then go back and read my first post in this thread that addressed that, it's there 🙂

Re: home delivery when paying for post?

I know both my postie and delivery drivers quite well. I set traps for my postie, he reciprocates. He gets upset if I haven't purchased anything for awhile as he doesn't have an excuse to play a prank on me. Last week on my day off I stuffed my letterbox with newspaper so he couldn't get the letters in. That meant he had to come to the door. One time he put a very realistic plastic spider between the letters. He usually gets some home made biscuits or something at Christmas from me to take home for the family.

The delivery driver has also been coming here for years. There's 2 of them that call actually. They know me by name (obviously from my parcels), I know them by name. They normally take 5 minutes to have a breather and a chat, even though they are busy.

The problem I have with people coming to my place is, my house is constantly a pigsty because I've usually got eBay stuff strewn all over the place. The front door is attached to my loungeroom and when you open the door, you have full view into the house, and my pigsty of a loungeroom. In fact, we don't like getting visitors full stop. We have a couple of friends who if we want to catch up with, we go to their place or meet somewhere for dinner. Even if the house is tidy, we prefer not to have visitors. We much prefer our own company and the company of our pets.

That's why if I have a local buyer, I offer to deliver, or meet at a neutral location. Every time I have offered to deliver, they have all agreed to meet elsewhere. The items they'd bought all had free postage, so there was no problems about what to do as far as refunding postage costs was concerned. One buyer had expressed an interest in an item, but then I didn't hear from him for ages. The listing ended and I hadn't got around to relisting it. He contacted me again asking if I still had it. I said yes, so I dropped it off to him at his work. As it happened, I needed to go to the shop right next door that day, so neither of us was inconvenienced. As it wasn't listed at the time, the deal was done off eBay.

If both buyer and seller agree to a pick up / delivery, there's no problems. It's also up to both parties what to do about any associated postage costs. If they deliver it next door, that's one thing, but if they have to drive a distance to deliver it at the buyers request, then they should be allowed to keep the postage cost (within reason). I specify in my listings that I post using Aust Post, so that's how buyers expect to get their items delivered.
